Dimension
Same teams. Same skills
New combined powers.
With the demand for virtual entertainment growing faster than ever, our team continues to develop new production approaches for ever richer immersive storytelling. Combining our real-time capabilities and our volumetric expertise, Dimension is increasingly pushing the boundaries of realism within real-time production, being engaged for virtual production in broadcast and filmed entertainment as well as for immersive content.
Dimension captured some of the country’s most beautiful locations, which have become the basis for hyper-realistic, real-time environments, produced in weeks rather than months, thanks to Dimension’s new location photogrammetry pipeline. Realistic Environments was made in Unreal and is running in real-time in VR.
While photogrammetry is often used to create assets within games, this is the most efficient pipeline we’ve experienced of location photogrammetry for generating extremely high quality virtual worlds. The resulting realistic environments are primed for use in-camera, as virtual locations, or in post-production in entertainment, for film and TV as well as in gaming and virtual reality.
If rendered in real-time engines via LED or projection, these scenes can also be tracked in-camera and on set.
As with earlier demo Space Opera, the realism of the environment makes it entirely believable to the human eye, resulting in an emotional resonance with the audience that’s otherwise difficult to achieve.
Craig Stiff | Photogrammetry Lead & 3D Generalist
"I've always been excited about recreating reality as accurately as possible. In my early years it was with a pencil and paper, then I moved on to film making and computer generated visual effects. Now we have the new wave of immersive VR and the moment I put on a headset, I was hooked!", said project lead Craig Stiff.
"We've been researching and developing ways to utilise technologies such as LIDAR, photogrammetry and drone photography to capture real locations and preserve as much of the real-world detail as possible, whilst at the same time allowing the location to run efficiently in virtual reality. With the goal of a productive pipeline, the methods we've been developing can also allow this to be achieved by a single artist within weeks.
"Having highly accurate, virtual representations of real locations or film and TV sets will be invaluable to many industries. There is nothing like taking a whole place home in your pocket and having it to re-explore whenever you like in virtual reality!"
Dimension has been developing a proprietary photogrammetry pipeline in recent years, the results of which can be seen in Sky’s Britannia VR, and Oxford’s Bodleian Library in Sky VR: A Discovery of Witches.
